This traditional kulambu is made for festivals and poojas. Especially made for Thiruvathirai and also for Vaikunda Yekathasi.
Making this using 21 varieties of country vegetables gives this a excellent taste and aroma. This is served along with rice and also suits for idly, dosa.
We don’t use bitter vegetables like Pavvakkai, kovai Kai. We don’t use brinjals, suraikai and Murungai Kai. We don’t use English vegetables like potatoes, carrot, beetroot, peas, beans..
Raw Mochaikai – 1/2 kg
Raw Thouvarai Kai – 1/4 kg
Raw karamani Kai-100 Gm
Yellow pumpkin – 1 piece
White pumpkin – 1 piece
Sennai killangu – 50 Gm
Sepan killangu – 50 Gm
Sweet potato – 50 Gm
Karunai killangu – 50 Gm
Siru killangu – 50 Gm
Vallaipoo – 2 pieces of flowers
Vallaikai – 1 small
Vallai thandu – 1 small
Big Amla – 4
Small Amla – 10
Venadai Kai – 100 Gm
Pudalankai – 1 small
Perkankai – 1 small
Kothavari Kai – 100 Gm
Avaraikai – 100 Gm
Broad Avaraikai – 100 Gm
Small onions – 20
Tomatoes – 2
Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
Kulambu powder – 10 tsp
Coriander powder – 5 tsp
Tamarind – 2 lemon size. ( take out the pulp using 2 glass of water)
Coconut – 1 ( 4 cups)
Jeera – 2 tsp
Curry and Coriander leaves. ( grind all this to a fine paste)
Gingerly oil – 8 tsp, jaggery – 2 tsp, salt, mustard seeds, ulund dhal, jeera, hing, curry and Coriander leaves.
Take out the seeds from raw Mochai and raw Thouvarai. Clean and cut all vegetables as shown.
Put all together in a cooker. Add onions and tomatoes. Add turmeric, kulambu Powders and salt. Add tamarind pulp and 2 glass of water. Mix well. Let it one boil.
Close and cook for 1 whistle. After 8 minutes take of the steam and open. Add grinded coconut paste, Coriander powder and little water. Allow it to boil for 4,5 minutes.
Add jaggery. In oil fry mustard seeds, ulund dhal, jeera, hing and curry leaves. Add this to the kulambu. Add Coriander leaves, mix well and switch off.
Now the traditional Thiruvathirai Kalyan kulambu is ready.
This is made on the Tamil month Margali, and all this vegetables are available at this season. If you don’t get 21, you can do with 11,13,15.. In odd number..
