Pitlai is a famous South Indian recipe. It is made by using little cooked thour dhal, grinded coconut, tamarind along with a vegetable. No onions and tomatoes used in this. This resembles Sambar, but because of coconut it tastes yummy. It is served along plain rice. This video Shows Ivy Gourd Pitlai.
Ivy Gourd – 200 gm
Thour dhal – 1/4 cup ( 50 Gm)
Cook along with turmeric powder and mash it.
Tamarind – Amla size, take out the pulp.
Coconut – 4 tbs, grind it along 1 tsp jeera and few curry leaves.
Sambar powder – 3 tsp
Salt,gingerly oil, jaggery, mustard seeds, ulund dhal, jeera, curry leaves.
Cut Ivy Gourd as shown. In a tsp of oil, fry it for a minute, add a cup of water and cook for 1 whistle.
Add tamarind water, Sambar powder, salt and allow it to boil. Add cooked dhal and allow it to boil. Add grinded coconut paste and again allow it to boil. Add 1 tsp of jaggery.
In 2 tsp of oil fry mustard seeds, ulund dhal, jeera, hing, curry leaves. Add this to the Pitlai.
Now it is ready. Enjoy it with rice along with a Poriyal and Appalam.
