Kootu is a South Indian recipe, normally served in meals as a side dish. It can be eaten as a side dish, with rice and it is also good for Chappathi, Poori and wheat dosa. Normally we make Kootu with a dhal and a vegetable. Here we use raw green tomatoes instead of vegetable. It gives a tangy taste.
Raw green tomato – 4 ( I used 7 tomatoes, because they are very small in size.)
Moong dhal – 4,5 tbs
Green chilly – 2
Red chilly – 2
Coconut – 3,4 tbs
Jeera – 1 tsp
Small onions – 6 ( optional)
Garlic cloves – 4 ( optional)
Oil, mustard seeds, jeera, hing, red chilly, curry and Coriander leaves
Dry roast dhal, wash and soak for 10 minutes. In a cooker add dhal along a glass of water and cook.
In 1/2 tsp of oil fry onions, garlic, add tomatoes, and fry for a minute. Add 1/4 tsp turmeric powder. Add all to the dhal, close and cook for 1 whistle.
Grind coconut green, red chillies, jeera, curry, Coriander leaves to a smooth paste, by adding little water.
Open, mash it slightly add grinded paste, salt, little water and cook for 4 minutes.
In a tsp of oil fry mustard seeds, jeera, hing, splited red chilly, curry leaves and add it to the Kootu. Add Coriander leaves and stir.
Now it is ready. Try and enjoy.
