Kootu is a simple, tasty side dish for rice and chappathi. It is made by cooking a vegetable along with dhal and little coconut paste. Let us see how to make Banana Stem Kootu., in Tamil known as Vallai Thandu.
Ingredients
Vallai Thandu – 1
Moong dhal – 4 tbs
Coconut – 3 tbs
Green chilly – 2
Jeera – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder, salt, oil, mustard seeds, hing, curry leaves.
Steps
Dry roast moong dhal, wash and soak it for 15 minutes. Drain the water. In a cooker, boil 250 ml water, add dhal, little turmeric powder and boil it for 5 minutes.
Cut Vallai thandu as shown.

Add it to the dhal and cook for 1 whistle. Grind coconut, jeera, green chilly, little curry leaves to a smooth paste.
Add the paste and salt to the cooked dhal and vegetable, cook it for 3,4 minutes.
In 1 tsp of oil, fry mustard seeds, hing and curry leaves, add it to the Kootu. Now it is ready.
